Paper Description
Introduction and development of basic skills required for a successful vocal and instrumental chamber music performance.
This paper focuses on the development of comprehensive chamber music and ensemble skills, and the improvement of musicianship in relation to this.
Paper Structure
Students will primarily be taught in the Performing Arts Academy with performances and dress rehearsals held in the Gallagher Concert Chamber. These teaching sessions will normally require all students to be present.
Voice students will also look at the fundamental elements of performance practice and protocols, with a focus on acting and stagecraft, dialogue learning, and collaboration skills in vocal and dramatic performance.
Students will be taught as a member of a chamber ensemble, with each group receiving a minimum of 9 coaching or combined class sessions per trimester.
Instrumental and Vocal students will be assessed for their chamber performances across the year. For Vocal students, these may include the Oratorio concert, Opera/Opera Showcase and the Music Theatre Showcase, and other concerts including external concerts. Progress assessments will be graded on attendance to rehearsals, which can fall outside of lecture times, and on commitment to each chamber rehearsal and class, regardless of whether a lecturer is present or not.
All students are required to be present at all rehearsals, coaching sessions and performances.
Vocal students, and Instrumental groups are required to perform a minimum of twice per trimester in the general Performance Hour 1:00 - 3:00pm Fridays.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:
Assessment
Assessments are made on the basis of student performance. This is either to judge progress from the previous session, or performance standard.
Assessment Components
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
Required and Recommended Readings
Other Resources
Extensive and intelligent listening to recordings and concerts is one of the primary tools for developing musicianship. Daily listening to RadioNZ Concert should be undertaken. Students should use the online resource Naxos Music Library and the library CD collection as well as attend Wednesday lunchtime concerts, NZSO concerts (Founders Theatre), and all Chamber Music New Zealand concerts. Students are encouraged to make an effort to attend NZ Opera performances (held in Auckland).
Online Support
Workload
On a weekly basis, students should expect to attend regular coaching sessions, Friday Performance Hour 1- 2.30. Instrumental students should have a minimum of two two-hour group rehearsals per week, and an additional hour of individual practice. Singers should expect to spend two hours per week on individual study, with group rehearsals also arranged, and attended.
Self directed study is expected to undertake this paper, and organised classes and coaching will also take place, but will not be the only arrangement for studying this paper.
